Microsoft Introduces AI-Powered Notepad with Text Rewrite Feature
Microsoft has introduced an AI-powered Rewrite feature in Notepad, designed to enhance the text-editing experience in Windows 11. Currently available to Windows Insiders in select regions, this new tool allows users to rephrase, adjust tone, or modify the length of their text. The feature is built on a GPT AI model and offers three rewrite options, giving users flexibility in content modification. To access the Rewrite option, users simply highlight the text, right-click, and select the feature, or use the Ctrl + I shortcut.
This AI addition to Notepad marks a significant shift for the app, which has maintained a basic interface since its introduction in 1983. The tool promises to make writing more efficient by allowing users to refine specific sections rather than rework entire documents. However, the feature is currently limited to select regions such as the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany, and users have 50 credits to test it out.
For those outside the Windows Insiders program, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, along with Copilot Pro users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, will get 60 AI credits monthly to access the feature. The system utilizes Azure for cloud-based processing, ensuring that content is neither stored nor reused.
This new functionality, with built-in content filtering for harmful or inappropriate text, represents Microsoft’s push towards integrating AI into daily productivity tools, giving users more control and customization over their writing. As AI continues to evolve, features like this could become essential for content creators looking to optimize and refine their work.
